Rakhi celebrates human emotions and relationships. The real essence
behind the celebration is to uphold the most noblest and purest of human
emotions of love and concern for your siblings. Each festival in India
has a cause and significance behind its celebration and o do Raksha
Bandhan. It brings the family together and that mere togetherness is
celebration. Nowhere in the world this kind of sibling relationship is
celebrated as in India. It is the affection and love of brothers and
sisters, which is celebrated. It is the day when siblings pray for each
other's well being and happiness. As the name Raksha Bandhan signifies
the bond of protection. Which is a pledge from brothers to protect the
sisters from all odds of life and similarly the sisters pray for the
protection of their brothers from all evil.
The festival usually falls on the Shravan Purnima (the full moon day of
the Shravan Purnima, which is a full moon day of the Shravan month and
generally occurs in the month of August. Today Rakhi is celebrated as a
sibling festival but it was not always so. There have been references in
the pages of history, which suggests that Rakhi has been used as a
Raksha or protection that could be tied by wife, daughter or mother. For
ages Rakhi symbolizes the warmth shared between the siblings. But now it
goes way beyond it. Some tie rakhis to neighbors and close friends even
to relatives signifying a peaceful co-existence of every individual.
Congregations like Rakhi Utsavs, conceptualized by Rabindranath Tagore,
to promote the feeling of unity and a commitment to all members of
society to protect each other and encourage a harmonious Social life.
The day has deeper perspective in today's scenario as the festival
upholds the moral, spiritual and cultural values. The customs and
traditions associated with the festival is worth inculcating by everyone
of us because it speaks of the harmony and peaceful coexistence. It's
not only about the love and care shared among siblings but it
encompasses the entire human race and binding the family together in an
emotional bond. In other words Rakshabandhan is the mere celebration of
togetherness.
